What is a domain name? |
|
A domain name is a unique
alpha-numeric name that is used to identify a particular computer, web
server or mail server that is connected to the Internet, and to let the
user find their way around the internet in an easier and more convenient
manner. A domain can only be registered to one user at a time,
which is what makes it so unique.
Domain names are part of a system called Domain Name Service (DNS),
which provides you with an easy-to-remember address. The DNS
actually converts the domain name (e.g. YourDomain.com) into an
Internet Protocol (IP) number (e.g. 194.127.353.13), etc...
Domain names enable Internet users to type in a name, such as
MyFavoriteWebSite.com, rather than to type in an IP address (which might
look like this: 64.154.34.175), to reach the web site of their choosing. This allows ordinary internet users to find web sites and to
send email to addresses with familiar names such as "TopNotchHosting.com",
without being forced to memorize the numerical addresses that locate the
computers or servers on the Internet. |

Why
should I register a domain? |
|
Registering a domain name on the
internet is the equivalent of registering your company name. Once
registered, no other parties are able to use that name. Because
there are many companies with similar names, it is important to
register a suitable domain name for your business, project, etc... as soon as possible. Registering a
suitable domain name is advisable to ensure that your clients can easily
remember the address or information you provide on the Internet.
Please keep in mind that domain names must have a minimum of 3
characters and should be ideally be easy to remember. |

Do
I need a web site as well? |
|
You
are not required to own or operate a web site if you register a
domain name. You can simply register your domain name and leave it
dormant until such time as you are ready to use it. Doing so would
prevent other companies with like names from using the domain that
you have already reserved for yourself; thereby preventing potential
loss of business. |
